A Comics Manifesto

Content: There is a small body of good comic book work that's come out over the last few decades, but very few books that I could compare with my favourite fiction writers, thinking of Peter Carey or Russell Hoban for example. I want to create books that do compare favourably, that tell original, unique stories that defy genre classification.

Form: That said, I'm not trying to adapt the novel into a comic book form. Comics lie somewhere between prose, poetry, and the storytelling techniques available to childrens' picture books. On top of that, the visual/spatial dimension adds all sorts of possibilities and challenges. I want to explore the use of this vast territory in the service of good storytelling.

The Moon Bone Cycle : 2010

I've just published a 43-page painted comic book (or "graphic novel", or "sequential art" if you prefer). I'm working on a number of other projects at present, watch this space.
