Spinning Icons
One great thing about Ajax is that your web app can contact the server without having to interrupt the user. However, it’s also important to keep the user informed that the server is indeed being contacted, and the app hasn’t just fallen over or frozen. To this end, the little spinning icon usage pattern has come about. Hence, there’s a very common requirement in Ajax apps to have a little spinning icon, usually an animated gif.
In the past, I’ve built my own with the gimp, or put up with a less than ideal ‘please wait, loading…’ message. Today, I stumbled across Jakob Skjerning’s nice collection of spinners and progress indicators, which are just too good not to blog about. Enjoy!
