Setting up OpenZaurus to work with Windows 2000

OpenZaurus works very nicely out of the box on a Linux host machine, but getting it going at work on a Win2k machine (not Server) took a bit of digging around. Here’s the recipe.

1. enable IP forwarding (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q230082)

use regedit, set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Current Control Set?\Services\Tcpip\Parameters to 1

that’s it!

2. enable NAT (a.k.a. Internet Connection Sharing or ICS)

The following steps based on http://www.homenethelp.com/ics/ics-install-s2000.asp

  • open ‘my network places’
  • right-click properties on the outgoing network connection (not SL NDIS 5?, which is the Z)
  • open sharing tab, and check the ’share connection’ box
  • OK the message about the LAN address being reset, which it does do!! (and loses contact with the Z)
  • on the Z go to settings -> network -> Ethernet (usbd0) -> configure and select DHCP
  • eject the zaurus and re-dock, it should come up with a new IP on the usbd0 interface, granted by dhcp, and be able to ping by ip address, and by name, as the DNS server is set by DHCP too!
