Traceability

2005-
For the last five years I've worked as head techie for Historic Futures Ltd., world leader in global supply chain traceability systems, looking at issues as diverse as country of origin, dilution of organic supply chains, ecological footprinting, child labour and blood diamonds.

Sustainability

I decided at an early age to save the world. Hasn't happened yet, I've been busy. However, I have managed to spend several years developing 'holistic' simulation models and software that have been used to explore more sustainable futures.
2005-
I've helped Arup's Innovation & Foresight unit to develop and communicate the ECCO modelling project (latterly renamed by them as 4see).
2005-06
I consulted to Ove Arup on their Zero Carbon city planning project for Dongtan Island, Shanghai, providing a framework for iterative interdisciplinary development that brought the transport, housing, energy and water teams together. The same approach has since been applied to studies of central London, I've been told.

2003-04
I developed a simulation model of P.R. China for a research group at Tsinghua University.
2001-05
I developed a model of the Republic of Ireland for FEASTA, addressing Peak Oil before it was fashionable! This work later evolved into the Energy Scenarios Ireland project.
1995-2007
I consulted to the CSIRO Resource Futures Program (Australia) for several years, supporting systems models alongside their large input-output models
1997-99
In 1999/2000, I developed a java-based simulator for running ECCO models online.
1995-97
For several years I worked on EC research projects into ecological economics modelling, using the ECCO modelling approach.
1993-99
I undertook a PhD thesis in ecological economics and modelling at the Centre for Human Ecology and University of Edinburgh.
